Will Patrick Holford Be Calling Upon His Mailing List to Sign the New Andrew Wakefield Petition? If So, We’ve Made Some Annotations

In June 2007, as the Autism Omnibus Hearings were in progress and the initial test case was being heard, Patrick Holford contacted his mailing list and asked them to sign a petition in support of Dr Andrew Wakefield. Although it doesn’t look like he ever signed the petition, it is clear that he influenced other people to sign, people who directly cited him as instrumental in the decision not to vaccinate children against preventable diseases.

Dr Carmel O’Donovan, Andrew Wakefield’s wife, recently emailed around asking for signatures in support of him. However, it seems that there is another petition, this one grandiosely and desperately asking people to sign up to We Support Andy Wakefield (Tiny URL’d). Age of Autism rather half-heartedly just reproduces the blusterous call for an enquiry (Tiny URL’d) and, without any trace of irony, condemns “the censorship of science” and the competence of Brian Deer in his remarkable investigative journalism.

We offer an annotated version of the petition: all links have been added by us and our text additions are in italics. Continue reading

Patrick Holford Promotes Error: Does This Explain His Continuing Support for Opposing MMR and Supporting Andrew Wakefield’s Research?

Patrick Holford on ITV Lunchtime 16 April 2008
Former Visiting Professor Patrick Holford has such a sensitive moral barometer that he is constantly pointing out his perception of the failings of actual researchers and scientists and questioning their integrity. Operating in this parallel world that he does (see Part 1 and Part 2), perhaps it is not surprising that he continues to avoid issuing an update on what the findings from the Autism Omnibus and the stark revelations of the fraud and deliberate manipulation that underpins Dr Andrew Wakfield’s research means for his marketing and promotion of unevidenced diagnostic tests and diet strategies for the ‘treatment’ of autism (assessed here).

You may remember Patrick Holford’s keen support for Andrew Wakefield and his research (see, also, Patrick Holford and Andrew Wakefield’s Discredited Findings: Part 1 and Part 2). we have previously noted that Holford espouses support for Wakefield and his research allows some entrepreneurs to sell unevidenced diagnostic tests (both Wakefield and Holford continue to support the use of Secretin despite not only the absence of efficacy but the indication that it may be less efficacious than a saltwater placebo), promote consultation for difficult-to-follow diets and sell supplements. Jeni Barnett, LBC and Global Radio, MMR Segment 7 Jan 2009 and the Ben Goldacre Coverage: Part 2

The first part of the list is: Jeni Barnett and the LBC Radio MMR Vaccine Segment: Updated with links of blog coverage.

We are now constructing a supplementary list of blog posts and other coverage of Ben Goldacre v. Jeni Barnett, LBC and Global Radio in re: MMR Vaccine Segment 7 Jan 2009 from Feb 11 2009 (with some key posts from the first list). This will be a rolling update for some time. Continue reading

Jeni Barnett and the Missing Blog Posts About MMR Segment on LBC Radio

Jeni Barnett and LBC Radio, we say this for your own good because it must be miserable underneath those duvets. Stop making things worse. Deleting blog posts is not going to make this go away because, short of an EMP, the Internet keeps track of these things (cache for now, Quackometer has both posts, the Tiny URL version still works and there maybe images later).

Deletion will not mend fences. Talk to Dr Ben Goldacre and others. He removed the segment, please drop your rights to hold the threat of a law suit against him. Above all, talk to him. He’s a reasonable man.

Most importantly, Jeni Barnett needs to apologise wholeheartedly and without reservation, to Yasmin. Nobody but Jeni Barnett believes that Yasmin’s phone call was “vicious”. Continue reading

Jeni Barnett. Has The Streisand Effect Taught You and LBC Radio Nothing?

You would think that it was not possible for Jeni Barnett and LBC Radio to compound their errors and mishandling of this issue – that the past few days and the blogosphere reaction to LBC’s Legal Chill Effect as administered to Dr Ben Goldacre might have taught something to Jeni Barnett and LBC Radio about the Streisand Effect. However, as the comments have disappeared from her two postings Bad Scientists and MMR and Me, it seems not.

Oddly enough, there was a discussion on this morning’s Start The Week (Matt Wardman has the snippet) on how, on the Internet, few things ever really disappear. Head over to Quackometer: Jeni Barnett, Have You Lost Something? Continue reading

Andrew Wakefield Responds to Brian Deer: Summary, “I regret nothing…Single jabs are the way ahead”

Dr Andrew Wakefield has responded to the series of claims made in Brian Deer’s Sunday Times‘s articles: Andrew Wakefield’s Response To Brian Deer (pdf) (also now online in html). Wakefield continues to imply that any mistakes are the responsibility of his colleagues (see earlier indications of this) and his clearest message is that he regrets nothing: Continue reading

Brian Deer Discusses Andrew Wakefield in the Sunday Times: Many Updates

Writing in the Sunday Times, Brian Deer reveals that MMR doctor Andrew Wakefield fixed data on autism.

THE doctor who sparked the scare over the safety of the MMR vaccine for children changed and misreported results in his research, creating the appearance of a possible link with autism, a Sunday Times investigation has found.

Confidential medical documents and interviews with witnesses have established that Andrew Wakefield manipulated patients’ data, which triggered fears that the MMR triple vaccine to protect against measles, mumps and rubella was linked to the condition.

Some Rebuttals to Jeni Barnett’s Canards in Her LBC Radio MMR Segment

It would take more time than we have to put together a post that could encompass all of the errors and fallacies in Jeni Barnett’s lamentable LBC Radio piece on MMR. Particularly as this is one of those times when there is more to blog about than time available to do it when you have noses to wipe and daylight bulbs to buy for your ailing indoor plants.

However, we’ve finally been roused to put together a quick list of some rebuttals to some of the more obvious canards in Jeni Barnett’s lamentable LBC Radio piece on MMR. We were partly prompted to this by a comment left on Ben Goldacre’s blog by Honesty in Science.

So Ben you believe censorship will not backfire and will not lead to more people questioning of Honesty of the vaccine debate?
When it becomes common knowledge that all debate is being stifled and the reasons why parents do not vaccinate are taboo the shit will really hit the fan.
You will face charges of not being able to defend the science of vaccinations openly and honestly and not able to tpp publically refute the claims of the anti vaxxers.

Jeni Barnett and the Phone Call with Yasmin on the LBC MMR Segment

Dr Ben Goldacre of Bad Science has publicised Jeni Barnett’s segment on MMR from the Jeni Barnett Show, LBC Radio, Sunday 1 Feb 7 January 2009. This MMR segment contained many extraordinary assertions and exchanges. You may be interested in her back and forth with her final caller. Continue reading

Jeni Barnett and the LBC Radio MMR Vaccine Segment: Updated with links of blog coverage

Jeni Barnett says Measles was never that bad anyway
Jeni Barnett recently hosted a ridiculously bad discussion of the MMR vaccine, on LBC radio, 7th January 2009. Highlights included, for example, her admitting that she did not know what was in the MMR vaccineafter ranting at some length about what she perceived as the risks of vaccines and their ingredients.

We are therefore pleased to see Jeni admitting that she failed to act as one would expect a responsible broadcaster to Continue reading
