Social Media Strategies for Employers and Organisations: Suggestions for LBC and Global Radio

US Airforce Social Media Tool

Putting aside the recent difficulties that have embroiled Jeni Barnett and Dr Ben Goldacre, LBC and Global Radio are communication companies and, as such, they are careful monitors of communication technology and zeitgeist. Most businesses have some form of press strategy for managing their image and responding to media enquiries; it is taken for granted and a recognised cost of doing business or even running a charity. Agents for various celebrities are keen followers of social media that refer to their clients. Continue reading

LBC and Global Radio, Currently London’s Biggest Sulk?

LBC and Global Radio showcase presenters who are strong and passionate – they engage with their listeners in a way that is calculated to elicit some strong, passionate responses. Unsurprisingly, there have been some strong and passionate responses to LBC’s choice to make their first approach to Ben Goldacre one of legal chill rather than engagement in a matter of some importance in the area of public health – vaccination uptake in the context of a potential measles epidemic. Jeni Barnett and the Missing Blog Posts About MMR Segment on LBC Radio

Jeni Barnett and LBC Radio, we say this for your own good because it must be miserable underneath those duvets. Stop making things worse. Deleting blog posts is not going to make this go away because, short of an EMP, the Internet keeps track of these things (cache for now, Quackometer has both posts, the Tiny URL version still works and there maybe images later).

Deletion will not mend fences. Talk to Dr Ben Goldacre and others. He removed the segment, please drop your rights to hold the threat of a law suit against him. Above all, talk to him. He’s a reasonable man.

Most importantly, Jeni Barnett needs to apologise wholeheartedly and without reservation, to Yasmin. Nobody but Jeni Barnett believes that Yasmin’s phone call was “vicious”. Continue reading

Supporting Ben Goldacre: Could Stephen Fry Be More of a Mensch?

The utterly charming Stephen Fry has not only sent out a Twitter to his many followers, asking them to support Ben Goldacre, but has left a comment on Ben’s blog:

The fatuity of the Jeni Barnett woman’s manner – her blend of self-righteousness and stupidity, her simply quite staggering inability to grasp, pursue or appreciate a sequence of logical steps – all these are signature characteristics of Britain these days. The lamentable truth is that most of the population wouldn’t really understand why we get so angry at this assault on reason, logic and sense. But we have to keep hammering away at these people and their superstitious inanities. We have to. Well done you and well done all you supporting. I’ve tweeted this site to my followers. I hope they all do their best to support you. Publish and be damned. We’ll fight them and fight them and fight them in the name of empricism, reason, double blind random testing and all that matter.
Love
Stephen xxx

The Fry Effect is so significant that the Fabulous Positive Internet who have hosted Bad Science after Ben’s last set of difficulties have had to temporarily lock the site against new comments:

Im locking down this site. New comments won’t appear till the lockdown is rescinded, but they should be stored for later display.
On the up side, all you guys coming in from Stephen Fry’s Twitter shouldn’t take this site offline
Johnathon – Positive Internet on-call Engineer

Now, if Ben Goldacre were to appear on QI, it is possible that the Bad Science cup runneth over. Continue reading

Some Rebuttals to Jeni Barnett’s Canards in Her LBC Radio MMR Segment

It would take more time than we have to put together a post that could encompass all of the errors and fallacies in Jeni Barnett’s lamentable LBC Radio piece on MMR. Particularly as this is one of those times when there is more to blog about than time available to do it when you have noses to wipe and daylight bulbs to buy for your ailing indoor plants.

However, we’ve finally been roused to put together a quick list of some rebuttals to some of the more obvious canards in Jeni Barnett’s lamentable LBC Radio piece on MMR. We were partly prompted to this by a comment left on Ben Goldacre’s blog by Honesty in Science.

So Ben you believe censorship will not backfire and will not lead to more people questioning of Honesty of the vaccine debate?
When it becomes common knowledge that all debate is being stifled and the reasons why parents do not vaccinate are taboo the shit will really hit the fan.
You will face charges of not being able to defend the science of vaccinations openly and honestly and not able to tpp publically refute the claims of the anti vaxxers.
